Urban Decay Game of Thrones Eyeshadow Palette Review
A couple of weeks ago Urban Decay released their Game of Thrones makeup collection which included the highly anticipated Game of Thrones Eyeshadow palette. As a big fan of both Game of Thrones and Urban Decay, it was impossible for me to resist this eyeshadow palette.
From Urban Decay:
From the shores of Dragonstone to the frozen lands beyond the Wall, this eyeshadow palette was inspired by our favourite places in Westeros and the strong women of the Seven Kingdoms.
Use this arsenal of 20 shades to declare your allegiance to House Targaryen, House Lannister, House Stark, or to defeat the White Walkers. Jewel tones and earthy neutrals give way to dark metallics and frosty shimmers, all of which can be customised with our four transformer shades.
- 20 shades
- 3 matte shades
- 17 shimmers/metallics/glitter shades
The 20 shades are split into 4 sections that represent the main houses.
The first section is for the White Walkers.
- Take the Black – Jet black with flecks of glitter
- White Walker – Frosted, icy blue
- Frozen North – Rich, metallic teal blue
- Free Folk – Cool toned silver
- Hardhome – Pale white/pink shimmer
The second section is for House Stark.
- Nymeria – Soft, matte brown
- Winter is Here – Deep, metallic brown with warm undertones
- Weirwood Leaves – Dark, metallic plum
- The Sight – Rich, forest green
- Winterfell – Deep gold glitter
The third section is for House Lannister.
- Red Keep – Dark copper with warm undertones
- Casterly Rock – Soft, metallic bronze
- House Lannister – Matte peach
- Lannister Red – Matte red-brown
- Kings Landing – White gold sparkle
The last section is for House Targaryen.
- Stormborn – Cool toned purple with a sparkle finish
- House Targaryen – Rich gold with warm undertones
- Dothraki – Pure yellow gold with a metallic finish
- Bend the Knee – Irredescent pale purple
- Bay of Dragons – Light pink with copper sparkle
Where do I even begin with the packaging? The Urban Decay Game of Thrones eyeshadow palette is without a doubt the coolest looking palette I own. It’s very big and bulky and definitely not travel-friendly, but it’s designed to be a collector’s piece more than anything else and I think they absolutely nailed it. If you’re a fan of the show I’m sure you’ll appreciate the gimmicks of the packaging just like I do.
When you first open the box you’re greeted with a large mirror and a quote from Daenerys Targaryen on the other side.
Opening up the quote reveals a pop-up iron throne which I think is so unique and really adds to the dramatics of the palette. There is also another quote inside, this time from Tyrion Lannister.
The eyeshadow slides out from underneath the palette and can be completely taken out which then makes it easier to use.
Personally, I love the packaging. It’s got quite a few mixed reviews, as I’m sure you can imagine people don’t like the bulkiness. However, because I’m such a big Game of Thrones fan I love how reflective the palette is of the show. It’s also very sturdy and compact and it’s clear that so much effort went into it with all the details. So I think Urban Decay definitely deserves a round of applause for this one!
I couldn’t wait for this palette to arrive! I had seen so many pictures and videos online about it and thankfully wasn’t disappointed. The shades swatched beautifully, although the mattes were definitely less pigmented, and were very buttery to touch. If you’ve used Urban Decay eyeshadows before you’ll know that they are of very good quality and the Game of Thrones eyeshadow palette is no exception.
The mix of colours is gorgeous, my eyes were immediately drawn to the White Walker section and the Targaryen section. Since receiving this palette a couple of weeks ago it has been the only one I’ve used. You can really create a variety of different looks and the shimmer/metallic shades are unbelievably rich and stunning.
The only downside of this palette is the fact that there are only 3 mattes which are fairly similar. There isn’t much choice for transition shades or to use on the outer corners. Luckily I have many other palettes and hundreds of matte shades so this isn’t really an issue for me, but for someone who may be starting out and don’t own many palettes, this could be pretty irritating, especially considering the higher-end price tag.
I’ve created 3 looks using shades from every section to show you how versatile the palette is. I really love how these looks turned out and was able to create subtle, everyday makeup to more dramatic, Instagram worthy looks. I’ve also featured the two Urban Decay Game of Thrones lipsticks I ordered with the eyeshadow palette so you can see how it all works together.
For the first look, I used the shade Nymeria for my transition and then blended Weirwood Leaves into the outer corner and crease. As Weirwood Leaves is a metallic shade it was tricky to blend but not impossible with a clean, fluffy brush and very gentle blending work. I also applied Weirdwood leaves on my lower lash line. Then I used the shade The Sight and patted this over the centre of my lid and used Hardhome in the inner corners. The lipstick I used in this look is White Walker, which is my favourite out of the two.
For the second look, I started with the shade House Lannister for my transition and then used Lannister Red in the outer corners and the crease. I applied Stormborn on the outer corner and toward the centre of the lid, then Dothraki on the centre of the lid and toward the inner corner. For the inner corner highlight, I used Bay of Dragons and then used Frozen North for my lower lashline. I used the Lannister Gold lipstick for this look.
For my third and final look, I started with the shade Free Folk on my inner corner. Then I took White Walker and applied this to the inner corner and toward the centre of the lid, applying it over my natural crease to create a new shape. I then used Frozen North on the centre of my lid and toward the outer corners. Lastly, I used Take the Black for the outer corners to create a dramatic wing. Again, I used the White Walker lipstick for this look. (Please bear in mind that the lipstick looks slightly different in these pictures compared to the first because the lighting was different.)
This palette is fantastic and I am obsessed with the shades! If you’re a Game of Thrones fan then I’m sure you won’t be disappointed. There was quite a bit of fallout, especially with the 4 glitter shades down the side of the palette, but they were all so easy to apply and looked amazing. I love the variety of colours, although I do wish there were a couple more matte shades. Saying that though I did manage to blend out some of the metallic/glitter shades, Take the Black and Weirwood Leaves, without too much of an issue. I am a big big fan of this palette and I’m so happy I set my alarm for 7am on a Sunday morning to get it haha.
