Decorating a Gingerbread House

Decorating a Gingerbread House (Fail)
Decorating a gingerbread house this year was a complete disaster. Normally, I love decorating them. It’s always a fun festive activity. But, when the kit arrives with broken parts it’s pretty impossible to do. One thing is for sure though, I’ll never be buying a kit from Costco again.
Building the House
Before I knew what a nightmare this was going to be…I was really excited. The box looked really good and it was a lot more elaborate than previous years with the Santa sleigh, reindeer and Christmas tree.
Inside the box were all the gingerbread pieces, along with sweets and icing to decorate.
Sadly, the main sections of the house were already broken and split in half. It was disappointing but I was still hopeful that we could use the icing to glue it back together. After reading some online reviews it seems many people had the same issues as us.
It seemed to be going well, we managed to just get the roof on although it was extremely wobbly as the broken parts just weren’t holding.
Shortly after the above picture was taken, the entire thing collapsed and more and more pieces broke off. At this point, I was extremely frustrated and had to take a moment. I’m not going to lie, I did have a little cry. I was so excited to build this house as a fun, Sunday afternoon activity. It was the only Christmas tradition that hadn’t been cancelled this year and it was going horribly wrong.
Gingerbread Santa, Sleigh and Christmas Tree
After about an hour, once I’d had a break and was ready to get back to it again, we decided to give up on the house and move to the other parts.
While Jaz was putting the sleigh and the Christmas tree together, I was icing the mini Santa Clause…I was in no mood to do any actual building.
I think he came out looking pretty cute!
Next, we decorated the Christmas trees. They were a little fiddly and to be honest, we only did the one side haha.
6 reindeer were also included to decorate…but we were tired and fed up so we just ate them instead. 😂
All in all, it was a very stressful experience and I think next year I’ll stick to the regular kits you can get in supermarkets. Still, the gingerbread tastes pretty good so broken or not we still got a little treat at the end of it.
I hope you all enjoyed this post. Let me know if you’ve made a gingerbread house this year of if you’ve ever had a gingerbread house disaster.

I’ve never built a gingerbread house but I’d like to try at least once, I’d probably get frustrated and like you have a little cry haha. At least it still tasted good! x

Haha it is a fun activity, this is the only time I’ve ever experienced it going so horribly wrong! Yeah the taste somewhat redeemed itself 😂

This kit is by far the best one I’ve seen so far. It’s unfortunate that the pieces were broken! Did you order it online or buy it in store? I try to buy most things in store, as much as possible. I used to decorate gingerbread houses but these days I don’t have the energy or patience 😏

We bought it in store! It looked amazing but it was the most frustrating thing ever. Will definitely just be sticking to standard ginger bread houses next time haha

That’s so sad that it came in this condition from the store ☹️ It was a good attempt to try and fix it though! If you’re looking for a good gingerbread mix, I highly recommend Robin Hood brand for gingerbread (if you have it there). Its the same company that makes flour, but they also sell a gingerbread mix that comes in a package – the cookies are easy to make and the dough is really delicious.
