5 Horror Musicals to get you in the Halloween Spirit

As much as I love the classic jump-out-of-your-seat, hide-behind-the-cushions style horror movies they aren’t always for everyone. If you’re someone who isn’t really into horror movies but are looking to watch something different, fun and a little creepy to get into the Halloween spirit then give these 5 horror musicals a go!
The Rocky Horror Picture Show
A newly engaged couple have a breakdown in an isolated area and must pay a call to the bizarre residence of Dr. Frank-N-Furter.
This horror, comedy, musical cult classic is definitely worth the hype and something everyone should see at least once! It’s very funny, very weird, great for costume inspiration and celebrates everyone being different. It’s a really fun musical and the songs will no doubt stay in your head long after.
The Phantom of the Opera
A young soprano becomes the obsession of a disfigured and murderous musical genius who lives beneath the Paris Opéra House.
Jealously, murder, abuse, romance, the Phantom of the Opera is a chillingly dark musical that’s perfect for the spooky season. Having seen both the movie and the West End show I can confirm both are amazing. Whether you’re a fan of opera or not this is still a must-see musical.
Sweeney Todd
The infamous story of Benjamin Barker, aka Sweeney Todd, who sets up a barbershop in London which is the basis for a sinister partnership with his fellow tenant, Mrs. Lovett.
The demon barber of Fleet Street is bound to get anyone in the Halloween spirit! Sweeny Todd holds a special place in my heart. It’s been one of my favourite horror musicals after my college class performed it at our local theatre. It’s a beautifully dark musical with very funny moments and amazing music. I adore Tim Burton’s adaptation, Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter as Sweeney Todd and Mrs Lovett are just perfect too!
Little Shop of Horrors
A nerdy florist finds his chance for success and romance with the help of a giant man-eating plant who demands to be fed.
Looking to watch something featuring a cannibalistic plant and great songs? Then the Little Shop of Horrors is the musical for you! This is another cult classic horror musical that everyone should see. The storyline is definitely strange and just as wacky as Rocky Horror and I highly recommend it!
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Jack Skellington, king of Halloween Town, discovers Christmas Town, but his attempts to bring Christmas to his home causes confusion.
Of course, I had to include The Nightmare Before Christmas! This is one of my all-time favourite movie musicals to watch this time of year. It’s got some incredible songs and the best part is that it’s classed as both a Halloween and a Christmas movie!
