Dark autumn nights where the wind is howling and the rain is pouring down is the perfect time to catch up on a good book. Sitting by the fire or curled up in bed under a mountain of blankets is where you’ll usually catch me reading. There have been both old and new books that I’ve recently discovered which have really intrigued me and were immediately added to my autumn TBR list.

1. Kingdom of the Wicked

“Two sisters.

One brutal murder.

A quest for vengeance that will unleash Hell itself…

And an intoxicating romance.

Emilia and her twin sister Vittoria are streghe – witches who live secretly among humans, avoiding notice and persecution. One night, Vittoria misses dinner service at the family’s renowned Sicilian restaurant. Emilia soon finds the body of her beloved twin…desecrated beyond belief. Devastated, Emilia sets out to find her sister’s killer and to seek vengeance at any cost. Even if it means using dark magic that’s been long forbidden.

Then Emilia meets Wrath, one of the Wicked-princes of Hell she has been warned against in tales since she was a child. Wrath claims to be on Emilia’s side, tasked by his master with solving the series of women’s murders on the island. But when it comes to the Wicked, nothing is as it seems…”Description from Goodreads.

This book, released last October, sounds absolutely thrilling and exactly what I’ve been looking for recently. Dark magic, a brooding prince of Hell and a spooky murder mystery? Sign me up! It seems like the perfect Halloween read and I believe it’s a planned trilogy with the second book released just this month and the third book TBA. Also, the covers for these books are so beautifully gothic that they drew me right in before I’d even read the description.

2. Serpent and Dove

“Two years ago, Louise le Blanc fled her coven and took shelter in the city of Cesarine, forsaking all magic and living off whatever she could steal. There, witches like Lou are hunted. They are feared. And they are burned.

Sworn to the Church as a Chasseur, Reid Diggory has lived his life by one principle: thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. His path was never meant to cross with Lou’s, but a wicked stunt forces them into an impossible union—holy matrimony.

The war between witches and Church is an ancient one, and Lou’s most dangerous enemies bring a fate worse than fire. Unable to ignore her growing feelings, yet powerless to change what she is, a choice must be made.

And love makes fools of us all.”Description from Goodreads.

Another book where I immediately fell in love with the cover, Serpent and Dove sounds super intriguing. I’m always up for reading about witches and witch hunts. And, enemies to lovers is one of my favourite tropes so this definitely seems like something I’d quickly get obsessed with!

3. The Ex Hex

“Nine years ago, Vivienne Jones nursed her broken heart like any young witch would: vodka, weepy music, bubble baths…and a curse on the horrible boyfriend. Sure, Vivi knows she shouldn’t use her magic this way. But, with only an “orchard hayride” scented candle on hand, she isn’t worried it will cause him anything more than a bad hair day or two.

That is until Rhys Penhallow, descendent of the town’s ancestors, breaker of hearts, and annoyingly just as gorgeous as he always was, returns to Graves Glen, Georgia. What should be a quick trip to recharge the town’s ley lines and make an appearance at the annual fall festival turns disastrously wrong. With one calamity after another striking Rhys, Vivi realizes her silly little Ex Hex may not have been so harmless after all.

Suddenly, Graves Glen is under attack from murderous wind-up toys, a pissed off ghost, and a talking cat with some interesting things to say. Vivi and Rhys have to ignore their off the charts chemistry to work together to save the town and find a way to break the break-up curse before it’s too late.”Description from Goodreads.

Oh this book sounds so much fun to read! Described by the author as a more adult version of Hocus Pocus, I can’t think of anything more perfect for autumn and Halloween. A light and fun paranormal romantic comedy, this book will be a nice break from all the doom and gloom that I usually read.

4. Lakesedge

“There are monsters in the world.

When Violeta Graceling arrives at haunted Lakesedge estate, she expects to find a monster. She knows the terrifying rumors about Rowan Sylvanan, who drowned his entire family when he was a boy. But neither the estate nor the monster are what they seem.

There are monsters in the woods.

As Leta falls for Rowan, she discovers he is bound to the Lord Under, the sinister death god lurking in the black waters of the lake. A creature to whom Leta is inexplicably drawn…

There’s a monster in the shadows, and now it knows my name.

Now, to save Rowan—and herself—Leta must confront the darkness in her past, including unravelling the mystery of her connection to the Lord Under.”Description from Goodreads.

A gothic fantasy about monsters and magic? Yes, please! The synopsis of this book gives me all the autumn/dark academia/spooky vibes and I am here for it. The cover is also absolutely stunning! I’m dying to get my hands on this book. I can’t tell from the reviews if it is actually a horror, but it definitely sounds chilling. And, I believe it’s the first book in a series too. This makes it even more exciting as I love finding a good new series to follow along with!

Those are all of the current books in my autumn TBR List 2021! Let me know if you’ve read any of these books or if you plan to. Also, if you have any other recommendations that a similar, please feel free to share!

It’s totally what I would call “Spooky Romance”.
