Potion Making Cocktail Class at The Wizard Exploratorium

As a massive fan of Harry Potter and all things magical, when my husband and I came across a TikTok video of a potion making cocktail class at The Wizard Exploratorium in Soho, we knew we had to go! This immersive experience allows you to brew a selection of potions (cocktails) with the help of a magic wand. Dramatic, fun and theatrical, this experience was definitely unique and one that will be remembered.

Wands and Wizards Exploratorium

Our booking for the potion making cocktail class was at 6pm and the event runs for around an hour and a half. We got there a little early which gave us time to wander around the small shop area. There was a lot of cool stuff around including some jars of sweets with magical side effects, wands, DIY wand kits, cocktail kits, mini cauldrons and more.

There was also a unicorn head surrounded by sweets which look very interesting and unique. The whole place was so quirky and colourful and right from the start I knew we were going to have a great time.

Pouring our Welcome Drink

After a few more groups of people had gathered, the experience started and our first host was fabulous and theatrical and showed us how to use our wands to get a drink from the unicorn’s mouth. There were two options, either alcoholic and non-alcoholic. Obviously, I chose the alcoholic cocktail which was sweet and fruity and I believe gin-based.

Brewing our First Potion

After everyone had poured the welcome drink of ‘unicorn blood’ we were all then ushered upstairs into a small, dark room where there were tables, a little magical drink stand with a light and some menus. We were told to choose two potions to make from the menu. This was a really hard decision as they all sounded so good!

The ingredients for the first drink were given to us in a crate that looked very cute and Harry Potter-esque. As the menus were digital we were able to get the instruction on how to make the drink up on our phones. It was a little complicated as there were so many ingredients. And we definitely made some mistakes. But, it didn’t really matter as, in the end, all the ingredients needed to go into the jars and be mixed. Luckily, it tasted really good. Again, it was another fruity gin-based cocktail that definitely packed a punch.

To mix the ingredients together, we had to place the jar on the drink stand and touch our magic wand to the corresponding symbol. Then you could watch the magic happen as it stirred itself!

Creating Our Second Potion

The second potion was way more complicated as it came with a whole scientific-looking apparatus. This cocktail was more festive-flavoured with rum, cinnamon, orange peel and other warming winter spices. Pouring all of the ingredients into the apparatus definitely made me feel like I was in a real potions class. And although it was stressful, it was also a lot of fun!

After the potion had brewed for long enough, it was time to pour them into the glasses. This was the most mesmerising part as they started to bubble and produce a lot of smoke which flowed all across the table.

This cocktail was the sweetest drink I think I’d ever had in my entire life and, again, was very strong. It was definitely a drink to be sipped haha. Sadly though, as cool and tasty as it was, it’s not something I’d be able to recreate myself at home. But, that’s just all the more reason to go back and do the experience again.

Overall, this was a really fun and unique experience and something I’d highly recommend to any Harry Potter fans in London. They also offer a magical afternoon tea which I’d love to do too. And, right now, they’re offering a Halloween-themed afternoon tea for extra spookiness!

I hope you all enjoyed this post! Let me know in the comments if you’ve done this experience or if you’d like to. While you’re here, don’t forget to subscribe to Beauty and the Bookshelves. You can also follow me on Instagram, Twitter and TikTok. Thanks for reading!
