Book Review: Boy of Blood

Boy of Blood

I’ve been saying to myself for so long that I’ve been wanting to do more book reviews. My blog isn’t called Beauty and the Bookshelves for nothing! So when the lovely people over at Fiery Seas Publishing sent me both Girl of Glass and Boy of Blood by Megan O’ Russell for reviewing purposes I thought it was the perfect way to get started. I’m so glad that this is the first book/series I’m reviewing this year because let me tell you, it was a real page-turner!

Disclaimer: Before we get into this I just want to write a little disclaimer to let you know that all views and opinions are completely my own. I was sent this book complimentary for review purposes which does not alter my opinion at all. Every review on this blog has always been 100% honest and always will be.

Boy of Blood

About:

Publisher: Fiery Seas Publishing

Series: Girl of Glass

Genre: YA Dystopia

Release Date: April 10, 2018

After Nightland’s vicious attack on the domes, the safety and perfection of the world within the glass has been contaminated. Desperate to rebuild, outsiders are allowed into the domes to help, breaking the cardinal rule: outsiders and Domers must always be separated. But the city is in shambles. Crumbling into chaos without the Vampers of Nightland to keep order, and one name is carried on the wind: Nola.

Clinging to Jeremy, Nola struggles to find a way to exist in the domes, turning her back on all she learned in the city. But when one of the outsiders brings the dark secrets of the domes to light, the line between survival and murder blurs against the spectre of the dying world.

Can Nola follow the dark path laid out by the Domes? Will the dangers of the night become her new sanctuary?

Review:

Boy of Blood starts right off where Girl of Glass ended. If you haven’t read Girl of Glass I would highly recommend you do. It’s a unique idea and something I haven’t come across before in the dystopian genre, fast-paced with twists, turns, drama and I ended up getting very attached to the characters!

After the attacks on the Domes Nola struggles to come to terms with her part, she feels immensely guilty but can’t stop helping those who need it, even if they are technically the enemy. Megan O’ Russell does a great job in building a vivid and believable world, with global warming and pollution the domes are completely plausible. When I first discovered there were going to be vampires and werewolves in this series I wasn’t sure how I felt about it, but the way she writes them and how they came to exist was so different to anything I’d read before and I really enjoyed that element.

Boy of Blood is a lot more intense than the first book as the war between the Domers and the outsiders continue. I always liked how independent Nola was, let’s face it she has a pretty absent mother so she’s had to be independent. In this book I felt like she got a lot stronger and made decisions based on what she thought was right, rather than what other people thought. We really got to see more of Nola’s character as well as the people in the domes and Jeremy.

Ugh…Jeremy. I have to be honest, I am not a fan of him! I’m definitely team Keiran! Jeremey reminds me of a lost little puppy. He’s so clingy and can’t seem to have a conversation with Nola without declaring his love her. In one conversation I counted that he said the words ‘I love you’ 5 times….5! Now, this could just be because I’m not an affectionate person but if I was Nola, Jeremy would drive me mad! I severely missed Kieran in this book.

Overall

I read this book, and it’s predecessor, so quickly, I literally couldn’t put it down. I spent entire Sundays reading! Every time I went to close the book at the end of the chapter something would happen that made me feel like I couldn’t just stop there! The book ended on a huge cliffhanger and I’m so glad there’s going to be more in this series.

Overall I give this series a 4 out of 5, I’ve docked it one star because I needed more Kieran! It’s a great series and I definitely recommend it. You can bet I’ll be reading the third book the minute it comes out!
