5 Tips on Surviving Winter in Lockdown

I don’t know about you, but I always find January is a tough month to get through. The holiday blues hit me so hard, the gap between paydays is longer and the air feels dreary rather than magical all of a sudden. January 2021 is going to be even more difficult for many across the UK. With the lockdown/tier system in place with no end in sight, we’re all going to struggle. The thought of spending weeks, months or even another year living like this fills me with dread. But, following the rules is the only way we’ll be able to get back to some sort of normality eventually. In the meantime, here are 5 tips on how to survive winter in lockdown that will hopefully help some of you.

1. Have a Routine and Set Small Goals

Having a daily routine will help you mentally and give you a purpose. If you’re working from home then this shouldn’t be too difficult. But, if you’re on furlough or currently unemployed, getting up at the same time every day, going to bed at a reasonable hour and making small plans and goals for each day or week will really help. 

2. Exercise

Getting the motivation to exercise is very difficult, believe me, I know. But, it can do wonders for your mental and physical health. Starting is always the hardest part but the benefits you feel afterwards makes it all worth it. If you don’t want to do a typical workout routine or video you’ve found online, get more creative and find a new activity you enjoy. Spend hours learning and filming Tik Tok dances to keep you active. Go for a long walk and take photos of all the beautiful, winter scenery. Take up skipping and try to learn new tricks and styles. Try Yoga or Pilates for a calming, low energy workout. There’s plenty of things you can do and who knows, you may discover something you really love.

3. Keep in Contact with Friends and Family

When you’re feeling down or lonely it can be easy to shut people out but that’s only going to make you feel even worse in the long-term. Reach out to friends and family, ask them about their day, share TV show or film recommendations, video call, tell them about your own struggles if you feel comfortable. Remember everyone is in the same boat, we all need each other so try not to isolate yourself even more than you need to.

4. Enjoy and Embrace the Cosy Parts of Winter

Winter is my favourite season because of how cosy everything feels. Curling up on the sofa with my favourite scented candles with a book or a TV show. Having a bath after work to relax. Cooking or ordering my favourite comfort food. Winter is a great season to focus on self-care. So enjoy and embrace the cosiness of winter and spend some time looking after yourself. 

5. Limit your Phone Screen Time

Social media and the news is a pretty bleak place right now. While social media is great for keeping in contact with people and finding funny images or videos, it’s also filled with conspiracy theories, rumours and news from unverified sources. It can be a place filled with hate, judgement and being exposed to it all can be extremely damaging. Spending some time away from social media or news apps can help to refresh you. Read your favourite book, cook something new or play some games to escape reality for a little bit and be wary of just how much time you’re spending absorbing all this information on your phone.
