NIO Cocktails Review
Since lockdown happened there’s been a lot of things I’ve missed, especially over the sunny bank holiday weekends. Taking trips to the beach, spending the day exploring London, getting an iced tea from Caffe Nero. But, one of the things I miss the most is going out and having a few cocktails with my friends in our favourite cocktail bar. While it’s going to be a long time before we can do any of that, NIO Cocktails have provided pretty much the next best thing!
About a week ago my office sent us all a box with three NIO Cocktails and I’ve since bought another box of 9. So today I thought I’d share with you all which cocktails I bought and my thoughts on them.
How does NIO Cocktails work?
NIO (Needs Ice Only) Cocktails works by allowing you to build your own box of 3, 6, or 9 drinks which then gets delivered through your letterbox. With a range of 14 cocktails online, from classics to signature house mixes, there’s easily something for everyone! You can also buy curated cocktail boxes created by NIO’s head mixologist if you’re indecisive or buying it as a gift for someone.
I’d ordered my cocktails on Thursday the 14th of May and they arrived on Saturday the 16th which I was super impressed with considering the current pandemic! I definitely wasn’t expecting them to arrive so soon.
Each cocktail is packaged individually, in their own little sleeve and all you need to do is tear open the corner and pour it in a glass filled with ice.
I am definitely a fan of the packaging. It’s simple, colourful and easy to store. Plus, I like that you can see the colour of the drink in a little round window in the centre of each sleeve.
Which NIO Cocktails I bought
I built a box of 9 cocktails which came to £58 with free delivery, but it was split between 3 people. We worked out that it came to about £6 per cocktail. Pretty good value for money really considering you’d probably spend a bit more than that in a bar!
Manhattan – The warmth of whiskey and sweetness of vermouth create a perfect after-dinner cocktail.
Gin Sour – A perfect balance of sugar, bitter lemon and dry gin
Negroni – A dry, sweet-sour balance of bitters, vermouth and gin.
Boulevardier – Bourbon adds a rich warmth to this sophisticated take on the bitter-sweet Negroni.
Gin Proved – Rose petals, almonds and orange Curaçao create a unique twist on the classic Gin Sour.
Daiquiri – The classic combination of white rum and citrus.
Cosmopolitan – A modern classic blending sour lime, the bitter-sweet orange of Cointreau and cranberry.
Milano Torino – A classic sweet-sour Italian cocktail with vermouth and bitters.
Tommy’s Margarita – A refreshing twist on the Margarita that allows the tequila to shine.
Overall thoughts on NIO Cocktails
As you can see I got quite the selection! Obviously, I haven’t tried all of them yet haha. But the ones I have tried have been amazing. My favourite has been the Cosmopolitian, I love a fruity cocktail, especially in the summer. I love how easy they are. You don’t need any specialist equipment or extra ingredients, just pour them over ice and it feels like you’re back in a bar! They also really pack a punch. I was very surprised at how strong they were, it wouldn’t take me many to start feeling a little tipsy.
I’ve yet to come across one that I dislike. The flavours are incredible, you can definitely taste the alcohol, they’re nicely packaged and super easy to pour. I’ve really been enjoying them in the garden on a sunny evening with my fiance. They’d be ideal if you have any virtual events coming up too, like a pub quiz, a catch up with friends or a hen party. I definitely recommend trying them if you’ve been missing the taste of cocktails. In my opinion, they rival cocktails made in a bar and are the perfect substitute in the current situation.
Even when the bars start to re-open again, I feel like I’m going to be way too scared to actually go in one for quite some time. So, NIO Cocktails will definitely be seeing a few more orders from me haha. If they had a subscription service I’d 100% be signing up to that! I’ve also added them to all of my Christmas lists (yes, I start planning early…I just love Christmas okay?!) they’d make perfect gifts for so many people!
I hope you all enjoyed this review! Let me know in the comments if you’ve tried NIO Cocktails before or are planning on trying them. While you’re here don’t forget to subscribe to Beauty and the Bookshelves. You can also follow me on Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest too. Thanks for reading!
