7 Top Tips for your Engagement Shoot
Engagement photo shoots can be very daunting, especially if you’ve never had a photo shoot before! However, not only are they are a great way for you to get to know your wedding photographer better, but they’re also great for getting you both comfortable in front of a camera in preparation for the big day. I love the way our engagement photos came out and it’ll be great to look back on in years to come, reminding us of the days before the wedding itself. As engagement shoots are something most photographers offer in their wedding packages now I thought I’d share my 7 top tips for your engagement shoot.
1.) Choose a Location that Means Something to You
Location is everything and it’s best to choose somewhere that is familiar, comfortable and suits your style. Maybe the place where you got engaged, the place you met or had your first date, somewhere you both like to visit on weekends or a place where you have good memories together.
Choosing a familiar, meaningful location for your engagement photo shoot can help you both feel more relaxed and is a chance to create new amazing memories.
2.) Think About the Time of Year/Weather
Your engagement shoot can be any time of year but it’s important to consider all of the factors and the weather risks before making a decision. Understandably the majority of shoots take place in the spring/summer months as there’s less chance of rain, more sunlight hours and beautiful sceneries. However, autumn and winter are also great seasons to get some incredible shots.
If a particular season is more important to you, Jaz and I, for example, both love autumn, then go for whichever one will make you happy. As our wedding is at the end of October 2020 we decided to have our shoot in November 2019 to get an idea of the weather and the kind of photo’s we’d get on the day too. Plus we feel much more comfortable in autumn/winter clothes than we do spring/summer.
3.) Choose an Outfit you Feel Comfortable in
Choosing the perfect outfit for the shoot is arguably the most difficult part. It has to be something comfortable, something you feel good in and something that complements one another. You don’t have to wear matching colours or similar outfits but if one goes casual and one goes smart then it may look a little odd.
Choose something that matches your style, that you’ll feel confident in and that’ll you’ll be happy to look back on. You can’t ever go wrong with something classic and timeless.
4.) Have a Pamper Day
If you feel good you’ll look good! It may be worth considering getting your hair, makeup and nails professionally done before the shoot so you’re feeling your best. You don’t want your photos to come back and discover you’ve got a chipped nail or overdone it on the blusher! Also, make sure you clean your engagement ring beforehand so it looks brand new and extra sparkly.
5.) Have a Drink Before the Shoot
This is completely optional, of course, if you don’t drink then it won’t apply. Jaz and I had a drink just before the shoot which really helped calm our nerves and loosen us up. Obviously you don’t want to go overboard and get drunk. But, one or two drinks for some dutch courage and a small buzz won’t hurt. I, for one, am much more talkative and confident after a glass of vodka and lemonade so it definitely helped me.
6.) Ignore the Camera
Easier said than done right? If you’ve chosen a place that’s fun, comfortable and familiar then ignoring the camera shouldn’t be too difficult. Just focus on your partner. Talk and joke around together as you normally would. The end result will be really natural photos that capture your relationship perfectly.
Our photographer was good at sneaking around and getting shots from the opposite side of the room. We barely knew she was there the whole time!
7.) Have Fun!
This is a day you’re going to want to remember. You’ll want to feel happy whenever you look back on it so have fun and enjoy yourself! It’s not every day you get the opportunity to have a fabulous photo shoot. The more fun you have the better your photos will come out!
